I learned an umpire’s name today.
The umpire’s name is Stu.
This is Stu.
Stu made a call that made a fair amount of people cranky, and when those people let Stu know how cranky they were, he doubled down. Stu got defensive. Stu got feisty.
With years of elementary education instruction under my belt, more often than not, the feistiest and most defensive 8-year old is the 8-year old who made the mistake.
Stu made the mistake. “The” is a definitive article but also contains a plurality.
